The Neon Museum is moving to the centre of Warsaw !
The year 2025 will bring a new, significant chapter in the history of the Neon Museum – a unique place that has been promoting not only Warsaw, but also Poland for over a dozen years. The facility will move from Kamionek to a new location in the very centre of Warsaw – the Palace of Culture and Science. The move is related to the plans of the owner of the building where the museum is currently located. The current exhibition will only be available for viewing until April 27, 2025.
The Neon Museum opened its doors to visitors 13 years ago. Since then, the collection has grown to several hundred neon signs – not only from Warsaw or Poland, but also from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Germany – allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the colourful world of old illuminated advertisements. It is in the Neon Museum that you can admire the Mermaid sitting on a book, known to readers of Warsaw libraries, as well as the logos of the iconic Sezam, Cepelia, Jubiler, Ambasador Restaurant or the sweetly pink glowing Bajeczny. The facility is an important point on the list of Warsaw attractions – it is visited by over 100,000 people every year. The Neon Museum has also become an ambassador of Polish culture and art, also hosting official visits from abroad.
At the turn of July and August, the museum will welcome guests again, but in a completely new and unique place – on one of the floors of the Palace of Culture and Science. The move will be a big challenge, but the entire team believes that the museum will continue to successfully carry out its mission of protecting the iconic neon signs in the new location. The Palace of Culture and Science also opens up new possibilities: the exhibition area is larger, thanks to which it will be possible to present other neon signs that currently do not fit in the exhibition in the previous location.
– We would like to thank the authorities of Warsaw and the Palace of Culture and Science for their help. We believe that we will fit in well with the New Centre of Warsaw project and will continue to promote the capital with renewed energy. The museum in its new location will continue to be a second home for old, valuable neon advertisements. These signs were created by renowned graphic artists, artists and architects – taking into account the locations for which they were designed. They surprise with interesting shapes or unusual fonts and, due to their artistic value, they deserve protection – says Ilona Karwińska.
The Neon Museum is a non-public institution, founded by Ilona Karwińska and David S. Hill, who have been running a project to document and protect neon signs continuously since 2005. Its effects include numerous exhibitions, publications and renovation projects and, above all, the Neon Museum opened in 2012. Interestingly, with the museum's move, history is coming full circle: neon signs have already been hosted in the Palace of Culture and Science once before. One of Ilona Karwińska's first neon exhibitions took place in 2007 at the Palace. The positive reception of the exhibition meant that the initially short documentation project turned into a long history of neon protection and restoration, which continues to this day.
