The ‘winged wheel’ – the emblem of the railway – was first used in Germany in 1835 when the pioneering German Steam Railway Nuremberg – Fürth began to operate, and it gradually penetrated to other countries.
It was first used in Austria-Hungary in 1849. It’s possible that the logo is based on the shape of the winged wheel used on the Czech's Railway ČSD (Československé Dráhy) uniforms employees since the 1950s.
This ‘winged wheel’ logo is still used in traditional contexts. České Dráhy (ČD) now has a new logo. Many thanks to Czech Railways for donating the neon symbol, and to Viola Neubauer for her invaluable logistical help.
The logo has been fully and painstakingly restored and can be seen in the Neon Muzeum.
